Pants go on the outside

The first games of 2011 are here and they’re something of an odd bunch. Capcom’s Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective on DS is the highlight thanks to a string of strong review scores. The cheapest price seems to be £23.47 on Amazon unless anybody knows different. There’s also Kingdom Hearts Re:coded on DS, which is an …

Theme Park

Released: 1995 Formats: Mega Drive (played), Mega-CD, SNES, PC, Amiga, 3DO When Bullfrog started developing Theme Park for the Amiga and PC I doubt that even in their wildest collective dreams would the game end up on the humble Mega Drive. But EA gets what EA wants, and conversions for both Mega Drive and SNES …

2010: The games that you brought lots of

With the dust now starting to settle on 2010, the UKIE (The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment) have released charts for the best selling games of last year.

To learn that Call of Duty: Black Ops sold a shit load of copies isn’t a massive surprise. To see both Just Dance games in the chart though is a little surprising, as is the appearance of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I was under the impression that it charted quite highly upon release and then swiftly vanished. The biggest surprise of all though is to find that Art Academy was one of the best selling DS games of last year.

The best seller list for PSP makes for sad reading – two of the five games are FIFA. A similar thing has happened in the PC chart too, with both Football Manager 2010 and Football Manager 2011 being present.

You can view the charts in full by clicking on the link below.

(Ch)art attack

It would seem that more than a few gamers ate too much over the festive period. Just Dance 2 is up from #4 to #2, Wii Fit Plus has risen from #13 to #5 while EA Sports Active 2 has entered at #13. Kinect Sport is also still in the top 10, although it has …

Megamind: Ultimate Showdown

If I had a mega mind I know what I’d do – develop a game that’ll sit on top of the charts for months so I’d be able to go to sleep on a mattress stuffed with £50 notes. By playing this CGI movie tie-in I’d say that developers THQ Australia don’t share the same …

2010: The pirate’s choice

I saw a brand new copy of Red Steel 2 for £4.99 the other day. I know that it didn’t gain as much interest as the first game did but to see it fall to such a low price was a surprise. Turns out though that there were plenty of people interested in it. 850,000 …

Legs eleven

UK Charts This week’s chart is the first since Christmas. This means that a lot of new console owners have been contributing to game sales over the last seven days, and also those who have been out looking for bargains in the sales. There’s a change over on the top of the chart for starters …

New year, new features

Congratulations, everybody – we’re now all one year closer to death. One resolution we’re making for 2011 is to bring you two new regular monthly features. With retro gaming arguably more popular than ever we’ll dusting off some old videogame cartridges and writing some words about them. Rather than talk about the usual stuff though …

2010’s gaming predictions: checkpoint reality

Way back in December 2009 I made a few predictions for this year. How did I do? Considering I’m not Mystic Meg, not too badly. Prediction: Natal launch games include Killer Instinct 3, Fable 3 and a mini-game package featuring Avatars. I was kind of right here. Fable 3 was going to have Kinect elements …

It’s on like Tron

UK Charts In the Christmas chart every game in the top 10 was a sequel or part of a franchise. Had this week’s chart been the Christmas chart though then that wouldn’t have been the case thanks to Kinect Sports sliding up #15 to #8 and Michael Jackson: The Experience jiving from #12 to #10. …

Metacritic’s Worst of 2010

Metacritic’s worst 10 games of 2010 has worked out pretty evenly between formats – there are a couple of Kinect titles, a few multi-format jobbies and one each on the list for PlayStation Move, WiiWare and PSN. As you may have predicted, a few of these are movie tie-ins. Some things never change. Did you …

It’s Christmas! Let’s shoot people!

UK Charts Between them, Activision, EA and Ubisoft rule the top 5 this week – Call of Duty: Black Ops is rather predictably Christmas #1 and is followed by FIFA 11 at #2, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit at #3, Just Dance 2 at #4 and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood at #5. Nintendo takes command of …

Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet

An early cut-scene in this Lego Star Wars-inspired romp sees Thor playing with a rubber duck in the bath before complaining that one of his fellow superheroes has spilled his lavender scented fluid of cleansing. This doesn’t do much for Thor’s manly image, but it does set the tone of the game rather nicely. The …

That’ll leave a mark

There’s pleasure to be had by ripping open one of those bags that magazines come in nowadays. I think it’s from knowing that you’re the first one to flick though its pages. Have you ever taken a good look at the amount of exclamation marks the writers use on their bags in order to drum …

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

It’s fair to say that 2010 has been a vintage year for racing games. We’ve had Split/Second and Blur with their manic destruction while Codemasters showed us what they could do with the Formula 1 franchise. Gran Turismo 5 turned out to be worth the wait (well, almost) and both ModNation Racers and Sonic & …
