Kinect goes through the motions

UK Charts There’s no prize for guessing what’s #1 this week. 2m copies were sold in the UK over 5 days, generating an estimated £81.9m. The Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops sold the most copies with 55% of the share, while the PS3 version gained 42%. This means that the Wii, …

Kinect helps you shed pounds (and weight)

This Week’s Games It seems funny to say that most of the games out this week require another £130 to be blown in order able to play. I am of course talking about the Kinect, which doesn’t appear to be totally sold out just yet. Eurogamer reviewed the launch line up last week – Dance …

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Long before Enslaved there was a TV series shown in the 70s called Monkey that was also based on the 16th century Chinese novel SaiyÅ«ki. According to the TV show theme tune 70s Monkey was “the funkiest monkey that ever popped”. If you called this new Monkey a funky monkey he’d probably pop you round …

You can’t get blood from a stone

UK Charts GoldenEye 007 hasn’t managed to make it into the top 10 chart this week, but don’t feel down because 007: Blood Stone hasn’t made the cut either. Instead they’re at #13 and #17 respectively. I think Activision themselves are partly to blame – what were they thinking launching them both just 4 days …

DS’s future is the past

Usually when a console starts getting long in the processor the software released for it tends to be either kid’s licensed games or cheaply produced budget games. Although this will no doubt be the trend once the 3DS is out and DS sales start to slide, Nintendo has a plan to keep the DS hardcore …

Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff

This Week’s Games There’s no Bond movie this year yet there’s not one but two James Bond games out this week. If the early reviews are to go by then it’s GoldenEye 007 on Wii that’s the one to spend your golden coins on. GoldenEye 007 scored a lofty 9 on IGN but they only …

Bakugan: Battle Brawlers

Original games are plentiful on the Wii but they don’t appear as frequently on Xbox 360. That’s why when something interesting comes out on Microsoft’s box I’ll give it a whirl, even if it is in a brightly-hued box and has a 7+ age rating on the box. There’s a rather unpleasant saying that goes …

Fallout knocked off the throne by Fable

UK Charts With four new entries in the top 10 chart alone this week there’s a lot to talk about, so let’s get cracking. Fable III has managed to shove Fallout: New Vegas off the top, outselling Fable II by 6,000 copies during launch weekend. This makes it the third #1 for Microsoft this year. …

WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011

I don’t feel embarrassed to say that there was a time I used to enjoy playing wresting games. This isn’t because I was only as old as my shoe size back then (14) but because they were good fun. There was WWF WrestleFest in the arcade, which had huge crowd drawing colorful visuals and a four player mode, and then later WWF Wrestlemania by Midway with large digitized sprites and Mortal Kombat style special moves. WWF Superstars on the original GameBoy was probably the best brawer for the system too until the belated conversion of Street Fighter II turned up. It’s WWF: Royal Rumble on Mega Drive though that I have the fondest memories off, as I used to play it loads with a friend. We’d play Royal Rumble mode cooperatively, and also giggle like the immature schoolboys that we were over the ability to smack the referee in the chops.

Thanks to a brain full of nostalgia, it was the Royal Rumble mode that got my attention first. It’s a 30 man affair where 12 players can partake – if you get thrown out early then chances are you’ll get to ‘respawn’ as a randomly chosen character. It can take a while to get into a game (due to hosts leaving the lobby, people not choosing characters straight away, etc) but matches can last around 20 minutes and they’re pretty engaging. Once you have the opposition against the ropes a button bashing mini-game occurs which can be particularly challenging if there are two people trying to throw you out at once. Survive though, and you’ll get awarded extra experience points. Spectating isn’t as thrilling but the developers have at least been thoughtful enough to let you bet on who’ll be thrown out next.

Another thing that makes Royal Rumble mode one of the highlights is because custom made characters can be used, so it’s a good chance for people to show off the weird and wonderful wrestlers they’ve created. I used my effigy of Kratos from God of War, although after designing him I released that I shouldn’t have bothered. With his pasty white skin and ginger beard, WWE legend Shamus bares more than a resemblance to Kratos anyway. You can also design posters for people to hold up in the crowd via a basic art package.

Molyneux spins us a new Fable

This Week’s Games Fable creator Peter Molyneux recently said that he “has never made a great game”. I’m not sure how Microsoft feels about him saying that seeing that Fable III is out this week. By all account though, it is pretty great, gaining a strong amount of 8/10s. A game that may not be …

NHL 11

Whereas the FIFA and Madden games have improved massively over the past three years or so, the NHL games have always been pretty good. So much so, that it’s evident just by looking at the back of the box that the developers have struggled to think of new features to include for this annual update. …

In Soviet Russian, Alexey Pajitnov blocks you

Having recently well and truly (and also belatedly) caught the ‘Twitter bug’ I was hoping to find and follow Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov. Although mentioned in random tweets a few times, it he doesn’t appear on to be on there yet. It’s a shame as I’d been expecting to find tweets like this: “Finally managed …

Game Dev Story

I just lost a couple of days to an iPhone game. A very meta one at that. A game in which I made games. Ninja action games, pirate RPGs, and Japanese cosplay date rape simulators, among other things. A game about making games? A gamer’s wet dream, surely? Game Dev Story is an unassuming little …

Professor Layton and the Tablets of Euphoria

This Week’s Games Videogame publishers of the world must be able to smell that money sitting in your bank account. Fallout: …
