SUPERHOT and Hotline Miami add extra sizzle to this week‘s eShop line-up

Devolver Digital launched not one but two surprise Switch releases during Gamescom earlier this week – SUPERHOT and Hotline Miami Collection.

For the uninformed, SUPERHOT is an abstract FPS where time only moves when you move. As such, you need to pick your targets carefully while dodging incoming bullets, all while grabbing ammo and weapons from enemies in glorious slow-mo. The campaign is short, lasting around 3-4 hours, but there are a few extras – including ASCII art style mini-games – found within the faux MS-DOS interface.

Nintendo Life handed out an 8/10, calling it “most innovative shooter we’ve played in years.”

Hotline Miami Collection brings the two grisly pixel art top-down shooters together for the first time on Switch. It has already been yanked from the Switch eShop in Australia, so you know you’re in for a good time.

Double-Fine’s RAD also launched this week. It’s a post-apocalyptic rogue-like set in a toxic wasteland filled with mutated creatures. Luckily (we guess) you’re able to mutate into different beasts yourself – a mechanic that helps keep tedium at bay.

Reviews are mostly clocking in at 8/10. “Sometimes you’ll play for minutes and other times for hours – I’m about eight hours deep so far – but the more time you spend with RAD, the more likely you are to click “New Run” when you finally die,” said IGN.

Then we have a duo of retro re-releases – SEGA AGES Space Harrier and SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo. Scores are slightly mixed for Space Harrier, with some critics preferring the 3DS version, while Puyo Puyo has gained praise for its new additions such as online play. Once you pop, etc.

Square-Enix is back with a new JRPG too. ONINAKI is about life, death, and reincarnation, starring Kagachi – a man responsible for guiding souls to the afterlife. Despite a few rough edges and a slight lack of depth to the combat system, it has arrived to a positive reception. Nintendo Enthusiast felt it was deserving of a 9/10 while Nintendo World Report opted for 8/10.

Destructoid wasn’t too impressed, however, dishing out a lukewarm 6/10. “I’m emotionally torn on Oninaki because there’s so much to like here: it has a lot of great ideas, it just doesn’t execute them all as well as it should,” they said.

As always, the full Switch eShop line-up for this week can be found below.
