Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Escape from Ever After, Citadelum, and Fighting Force Collection hit the Switch

Final Fantasy VII has quite the history with Nintendo, originally announced for N64 before Square-Enix chose to side with Sony and the PS1. Here we are, almost thirty years later, with a remake of the PS1 original, previously exclusive to PS4, that’s about to launch not just on Switch 2 this week but also Xbox. Imagine trying to explain all of this to somebody back in 1996. “Yes, Nintendo still uses cartridges, technically, but some are Game Key cards…”

The good news is that FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE is reportedly an almost faultless conversion, currently boasting an impressive 90% Metacritic score. “The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade arrives in stunning form, with very few compromises made bringing it across to Nintendo’s newest hardware. It’s an essential purchase for RPG fans who haven’t had the chance to play this reimagined saga,” said TheSixthAxis.

The Switch 2 gains a glut of new games this week, as it happens. These include the Steampunk post-apocalyptic strategy game They Are Billions, the Roman city builder Citadelum – which is yet to hit other consoles, and features mouse support – the pixel art RPG Isekai Rondo (which gained positive reviews on Xbox), and Dynasty Warriors: Origins from Koei Tecmo. Nintendo Life awarded Origins a 9/10, although noted the a 30fps downgrade. “Dynasty Warriors: Origins on Switch 2 is a super-solid port of a fantastic reboot for the franchise,” they said.

Focus’ sci-fi Metroidvania MIO: Memories in Orbit is out now on both Switches, currently with an 83% Metacritic on PC. Destructroid felt it deserved a lofty 9/10. “MIO: Memories in Orbit is a gorgeous, exploration-driven platformer that thrives on your curiosity. What starts as a dark, confusing journey slowly unfurls into a vibrant world packed with secrets, hidden bosses, and environmental storytelling that rewards thorough exploration,” was their verdict.

This week also sees the release of the pixel art shooter Look Mum No Computer – based on the popular YouTube show – the ‘90s style survival horror EBOLA VILLAGE, Lovecraftian FPS Forgive Me Father 2 – which gained positive reviews on other platforms in 2024 – and the surveillance thriller duo Orwell: Ignorance is Strength and Orwell: Keeping an Eye On You.

Another to investigate is Escape from Ever After, a Paper Mario style RPG set in a fairytale world. Previews were positive, and it seems the developers intended it to be a love letter to Nintendo’s floppy franchise.

We looked at eastasiasoft’s Hextreme Void yesterday, which takes the form of a rogue-like brick breaker. Actions are restricted to choosing upgrades, such as adding extra balls or increasing damage, with the balls bouncing around the screen automatically. Requiring little interaction and featuring very few random elements, it runs out of steam quickly.

Other retro style games releasing this week include an EGGCONSOLE re-release of the 1984 action RPG Courageous Perseus, an Arcade Archives re-release of Konami’s Labrinth Runner, and Fighting Force Collection from Limited Run. This collection includes the two PS1 games; the first being a reasonable 3D beat’em up (originally pitched to SEGA as a new Streets of Rage) while the second was a poorly received third-person shooter, shoved out by Eidos mere days before Christmas – meaning nobody could review it until January.
