A long Bank Holiday weekend is upon us (Cheers, Lizzie!) and if you’re fortunate enough not to be working, chances are you’re curious about what new Switch games are debuting roundabout now.
There are certainly a lot of noteworthy new releases, spanning genres numerous. On the retro side of things there’s Wonder Boy Collection – packing four SEGA classics – and Jim Power: The Lost Dimension, a re-release of a cancelled Mega Drive run ‘n gunner that’s bundled with a new 8-bit demake created by PIKO.
Atari is also back with Gravitar: Recharged, featuring a refreshed painterly aesthetic, while Samurai Riot Definitive Edition delivers arcade-style side-scrolling brawling.
Fishing Paradiso may float your retro boat too, being a pixel art affair. Blending fishing with role-playing, it’s said to be easy to pick up but difficult to master.
Then there’s the pixel art Metroidvania Souldiers – which boasts Souls-like melee combat – and Silt, a monochrome puzzle adventure set within the ocean’s abyss. #
Reviews of Souldiers are positive so far, including a 7/10 from The Metro who called it “A lengthy adventure with plenty of compelling reasons for return visits.†Silt meanwhile gained a 7.75 from GameInformer who loved the art style and atmosphere but found the puzzles “exasperating.”
Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery also comes to Switch this week, being an evocative tale exploring the lives of two artists, told mostly through puzzle solving. The PC/mobile original gained positive reviews back in 2021. The Big Con: Grift of the Year Edition is a belated conversion likewise – a coming-of-age story steeped in ‘90s nostalgia. The first review score out the door is an 8.5 from Nintendo World Report. Imagine playing through a lost ‘90s Nickelodeon cartoon and you’ll get the gist.
Devolver Digital’s Card Shark offers something a little different, daring you to cheat your way to the top of 18th-century French society by deceitful card playing. Card marking, false shuffles, deck switching – anything goes, if you don’t get caught.
Other new releases include the side-scrolling RPG Pinku Kult: Hex Mortis, the Rampage-inspired Gigapocalypse, nuclear war survival sim Mr. Prepper, and the 16-bit style platformer Super Perils of Baking. Let them eat cake!
