Last week the PS4 exclusive Death Stranding was on the receiving end of mixed reviews. This week it’s the turn of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, which has gained scores varying from 4/10 to 9/10 (and everything in between.)
It was Video Games Chronicle and Game Rant who dished out the lowest scores. “It’s consistently dull and its new ideas fail to make it any more compelling than previous games in the series,” warned the latter outlet.
The Metro found it to be merely mediocre, meanwhile. Like the majority of critics, they found the new Dream Event mini-games fun, but claim that the rest of the package is a disappointment.
Plenty of other big-name releases are now available on the eShop. Ubisoft steps up with Just Dance 2020, which is reportedly one of the better entries in the series, while Nintendo dusts off Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy for a re-release.
Scores for Lady Layton are clocking in at 7/10 so far. “A strong puzzle game in its own right, although compared to the highs of its predecessors, it doesn’t nearly hold up as well. Even so, the pleasant visuals, wonderful writing, and (mostly) strong puzzle design make this an easy sell, even if the occasional missteps in some of the puzzle answers and the lack of compelling new features for this re-release prove to be drawbacks,” said Nintendo Life.
New Super Lucky’s Tale makes the jump from Xbox One, meanwhile. The Xbox version was cheap and cheerful, available for around £20, but this Switch release is almost full price (£35.99). The original wasn’t bad, but it was no Super Mario Odyssey. Hopefully it has received additional work since.
The full list of new releases can be found below, including the hardcore shooter STURMWIND EX, 2D brawler STAY COOL, KOBAYASHI-SAN!: A RIVER CITY RANSOM STORY, mini-game package Disney TSUM TSUM FESTIVAL, and the movie tie-in JUMANJI: The Video Game.
Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t the first Jumanji game – European PS2 owners received an extremely belated, low-budget, mini-game collection in 2006. Let’s hope this Switch endeavour is nowhere near as bad.
