Movie tie-ins have certainly become a dying breed – some twenty years ago, almost every big-name blockbuster saw a tie-in game. It took publishers a long time to realise that often the real value is in the franchise itself, not the movie adaptation.
Casting back to the days of old, DC League of Super-Pets: The Adventures of Krypto and Ace is out on all formats this week, published by Outright Games and based on the new Warner Bros. CGI movie. Expect something fun but overfamiliar – the screenshots fail to inspire much confidence.
There are actually two movie tie-ins out this week, if you excuse its tardiness – Krut The Mythic Wings (PS4/Xbox One/PC) is based on a 2018 CGI film originating from Thailand. It’s a hack and slash side-scrolling platformer that, weirdly, has three development studios attributed to it.
Believe it or not, Square-Enix signed on to publish PowerWash Simulator, which hits Xbox Game Pass this Thurs. Not one for thrill-seekers, but if you find deep clean videos cathartic, you’ll understand the appeal. Escape Academy launches on Game Pass too, offering various puzzle-filled escape rooms to…escape.
Indie releases pave the rest of the week ahead. We can expect the explorative adventure Time on Frog Island – which includes trading, fishing, farming, and more – WayFoward’s faux Saturday-morning cartoon style run ‘n gunner Spidersaurs, and the third-person horror adventure DreadOut 2 – which takes inspiration from Indonesian folklore and urban legends.
The Xbox One also secures belated releases of the Outrun-inspired 80’s Overdrive – first released on the humble 3DS – the 2D action platformer Azure Striker GUNVOLT 2, and the indie rhythm game MUSYNX.
Then there’s Superola Champion Edition, a multi-format auto-runner with retro flair – it seems the developers have a special fondness for the SEGA Master System, especially Alex Kidd. We’ll have a review later this week.
