Scorchio! Dozens of hot new releases hit the Switch eShop, including Super Mario Maker 2, Virtua Racing, Devil May Cry, and Dandy Dungeon

This week’s Switch line-up is one for the ages, with major new releases left, right and indeed centre. Our only possible explanation is that publishers believe the anticipated Super Mario Maker 2 will see a surge in eShop traffic. Well, that and the fact that the end of the month is often associated with payday.

As many will have doubtlessly predicted, Super Mario Maker 2 has gained glowing reviews. IGN felt it was deserving of a 9.5. “Super Mario Maker 2 does nearly everything better than its already excellent predecessor, keeping the charm of a Mario game while introducing some incredible new ideas,” was their verdict.

It also gained 4.5/5 from both GamesRadar and US Gamer. “Super Mario Maker 2 is an almost perfect package, putting equal emphasis on discovery, creation, story mode, and outright brilliant gameplay,” said GamesRadar.

US Gamer’s verdict echoed suit: “Super Mario Maker 2 starts with the foundation established in the first game, and adds new themes, new game styles, and new items. It falters due to the loss of the second screen of the Wii U and 3DS iterations, and the lack of Amiibo costumes hurt, but this is still a fantastic package for a Mario fan or budding lever designer.”

SEGA’s Virtua Racing is one of the more noteworthy retro re-releases of late, improving on the original with modern touches. Don’t be put off by its age – it’s still an excellent racer.

“Virtua Racing is by far the most impressive Sega Ages release to date, offering an incredible remaster that doesn’t just replicate the arcade game but actively improves its resolution and frame rate,” beamed Nintendo Life before handing out 8/10.

That’s joined by SEGA AGES Wonder Boy: Monster Land, aka the one if with the infuriating warning noise when low on health. Switch headphone users beware.

Capcom dishes up another re-release too, in the form of the original Devil May Cry. While the £15.99 asking price is far more reasonable than the £30 mark up for Resident Evil re-releases, a re-release of the Devil May Cry HD Collection would have been far more welcome.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night hits the Switch this week too. Sadly, this conversion was outsourced, and boy does it show. It’s a clear downgrade with freezes, framerate issues, muddy visuals and other niggles. The developer promises fixes are on the way, but how long we’ll have to wait is a mystery. Hopefully it’s salvageable.

Dandy Dungeon is one you shouldn’t overlook during this busy week. It’s a very literal fantasy RPG, involving a Japanese salaryman creating his own role-playing game in which he’s the hero. “Dandy Dungeon is a breath of fresh air in a time when most games take themselves too seriously. I love the music and humour here,” said God is a Geek.

It also gained 80% from GamingTrend: “While a little reliant on grinding near the end, Dandy Dungeon: Legend of Brave Yamada is a delightful little tongue-in-cheek RPG with a little heart and a lot of laughs. Its simple yet engrossing gameplay system mixed with fun puzzle mechanics and cute presentation make this a wonderful Switch title to play on the go.”
