In the mood for some hooker-beating

So, Grand Theft Auto IV is just a day away (unless you managed to get a copy early). Suddenly I’m starting to feel a little bit excited – the big games sites have published their reviews (10/10s all round), and some juicy gameplay videos have started appearing online. Here is one such video;

  • I hope this isn’t one of those games, like Halo 2, Halo 3 and Gears of War, where every big game site has given it 10/10 just because “that’s the score the reader expects to see”.

    Does that make sense?

  • I think a 10 sounds justified from the videos, but only in the sense that GTA was already great and it’s “more and better”. Doesn’t look like it’s doing anything amazingly new. But it’s next-gen GTA, which is in itself a great concept for some.

  • Yeah i’m with Adam here, I think that the concept of GTA on a next-gen machine can’t really be anything but great. Halo 2, 3 and gears of war, I wouldn’t give any of a ten. Halo 3 is my single biggest dissappointment that I can recall in a long time. I’m just as excited for GTA IV though, so i hope it doesn’t let me down…now I just have to try and find a copy (in S Korea)…

  • It’s a proper April 29th worldwide release, hence my slight surprise that I’m able to get a copy today – usually western PS3 games here are released anything from 2 weeks to 2 months after their US release. Just a few hours till I can actually get home and play it!

(Note: Actually, I still kind of want to play Football Manager 08 and UEFA Euro 2008 a little bit more… but I have to play GTA too, ‘just because’. Also I realise when GTA and football games are my most played, I’m bordering on being a twat.)

  • Good news, bad news, good news!

Good news: GTA IV is out here (in Hong Kong) today, on the 360 at least, everywhere has it.

Bad news: The PS3 version of GTA IV, which is advertised as having an April 29th release… isn’t actually out till tomorrow. And it costs about 20% more than the 360 version. WELL DONE SONY ASIA, you cocks.

I literally checked more than a dozen stores today on the way home, all had the 360 version but said the PS3 version wouldn’t be out till tomorrow. What don’t Sony Asia understand about the words ‘simultaneous worldwide release’? Though I suppose technically if that was the case, April 29th in the USA is April 30th here.

Good news: May 1st is a bank holiday, so at least when I get it tomorrow, I can spend the next day arsing about in my underwear playing GTA.

From the way Sony treat PS3 owners here, I’m almost tempted to get a 360 though. How do Sony specifically manage to make a clusterfuck out of everything? What gains do they think they make by releasing the same game a day later and more expensive than the 360 version?

  • In some store in the UK the 360 version is £39.99 and the PS3 version £44.99

    Apparently Game are charging £49.99…

  • Sony really are doing everything they can to make the Xbox 360 a success.

Still, aside from the fact I don’t own a 360, I want the PS3 version of GTA anyway – partly for the subliminal reassurance of having to install part of the game to the hard drive first, which makes me think it will play smoother (and yes, apparently the loading times are a few seconds quicker on the PS3). Even though the 360 version has potentially more downloadable content (or at least ‘sooner’, until exclusivity deals run out).

    Me no like loading times!

  • Sony have done a PS3 bundle – machine and game for £320. Woolworth though are doing GTA IV for free with any 360 – even the £159.99 Core/Arcade pack.

Notched up 3 hours of play so far and haven’t seen any loading times. Really like the animation – not 100% life like but adapts to different situations. Also played online for a bit, just messing around on the Party Mode with a friend.

  • Hmmm.. I could buy a 360 from Woolies on payday.

Whereas I’d have to wait an extra month till I could afford a PS3.

    Double hmmm…

  • Well, no luck in my town. Guess that’s cos it’s relatively small. Well, compared to my home town in England it’s massive, but it still manages to only have one tiny boutique computer games store. Stupid. Will have to check in the capital tomorrow. Hope you guys are enjoying it, I have a week off next week so will surely sit sweating in my pants in-front of the tv until I expire true Korean style…

  • Well, got my copy this lunchtime, finally. Might actually get to play it this evening!

Tomorrow I’ll send Mrs Adam to go out shopping for the day whilst I sit around in my underwear impaling virtual hookers. I don’t think bank holiday afternoons get much better than that. Well, they probably do, but whatever.

    It better not be shit!

  • Well, I’ve spent about 8 hours with it so far, mostly last night. It’s good, it’s very good.

That said, it’s not much different from GTA III. The missions play out in the exact same way (just with more interesting cutscenes). But, the gameworld is a hundred times more detailed. It doesn’t feel vastly next gen in terms of gameplay or graphics, but all the small detail stuck into the game is insane, the amount of attention they’ve put into everything.

Also, despite what other people are saying online, I quite like the new car handling. It feels a lot like Driver. The cars feel heavier and wobblier, and a lot more likely to tip when cornering. It’s not more realistic or anything, it’s just quite fun. It’s a lot more challenging to take a corner at speed now, in a good way.

Hopefully I’ll try it online soon but I’m not sure how playable it will be connecting to EU servers.

Highlights so far include drunken dates, attempting to drive home heavily under the influence with screams of panic from the passenger, and just sitting in the apartment watching the TV. And Little Jacob, he’s great.

  • I had to put the sub-titles on for Little Jacob.

Best bit so far: accidentally walking over a sleeping tramp, who then got up and said “I knew I shouldn’t have eaten that dead pigeon”

  • Finally played some online multiplayer last night… pleasantly surprised. It’s quite seamlessly integrated – just select multiplayer on your phone and you jump into an alternate multiplayer version of the city, and I was really pleased that I could play very well despite being 6000 miles away from the servers (I have to play on EU servers it seems).

Spent a while on Turf Wars, it’s basically a capture the flag game, and great fun. We had a 4 vs 4 match, which was basically mayhem. I spent most of my time either running people down at high speed, or getting blown up by rocket launchers. One nice moment had two of us each in cars, repeatedly running over an enemy gangster, but without enough speed to truly kill him. I think it took about six attempts each before we finally squished his head in, poor guy.

And I just took Michelle on a date to see Ricky Gervais make cancer and AIDS jokes. It was quite bizarre watching a five minute virtual-Gervais standup routine. He’s even more of a cunt in the game.

  • Still enjoying GTA, but since last night I’ve been experiencing some freezing and lock-ups, as have been mentioned on other websites and forums. T’was fine for the first couple of days, not a single problem, it’s odd how it’s buggering about now.

Basically twice it froze midgame, with audio still playing, needing a reboot. And twice it wouldn’t load up the game when starting at all.

So far I’ve had to reboot and, based on Rockstar’s advice (as it’s a recognised problem), delete the GTA game data cache (not the savegame, but the 3Gb install GTA makes on the PS3). That fixed it for a while but I’m having the same issues again today. Tut tut Rockstar!

Still, a few reboots and a reinstall aside, I’m liking it. The problem might possibly be an overheating issue, as it’s getting stupidly hot and humid here lately, but other people are reporting similar issues so I don’t think it’s just my PS3 overheating.

  • I hear the latest thing is many PS3 systems will freeze up unless you disable your PS3’s internet connection. There should be a patch soon… ¬_¬

    Still a fun game though!
