In an effort to make the PSP interesting again, and emulate the success of the PS3’s PlayStation Store, Sony have announced that they’ll be selling PSP games online directly through the PSP this autumn (in the US at least), with the PSP Store.
It’s about time really – we were sure Japan had its own PSP store to download PSP and PSone games, but maybe that was a vivid hallucination (we’re still unsure how PaRappa the Rapper ended up on our PSP). There are only a handful of truly good PSP games, but a whole raft of great PSone games, so it’s about time they started re-releasing those PSone games on PSP (although standard PSone disc images on your memory stick will play fine on a PSP with the latest PSone emulation firmware, if you’re a naughty BitTorrent person).
SCEA’s president Jack Tretton confirmed the whole thing by stating, “I think the advent of a long awaited and quite frankly long overdue ability to deliver a downloadable service for the PSP will help us out a great deal. Hopefully we’ll have it out there by the fall.”
