A couple of weeks ago, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto was quoted in an interview as saying, “I could make Halo. It’s not that I couldn’t design that game. It’s just that I choose not to.” Perhaps it didn’t sound as pompous originally. Now Halo creators Bungie have reacted in an interview with Joystiq, saying:
“Yeah, well. I just want to go on the record and say that Bungie is hard at work on a side-scrolling platform game featuring some plumbers – I’m not going to say what their ethnicity is, it’s none of anyone’s business – but we took that as a gauntlet, a sort of glove slap, and we’re going to respond in 2D scrolling style. That’s all I’m saying.”
Cat fight! Although to be honest, that’s not much of a gauntlet – making a copy of Halo would be a big undertaking, whereas even this humble writer can make a simple 2D platform game. A bit of a childish reaction from Bungie there – but frankly, Shigeru Miyamoto could make a Halo clone. He could probably even make a Zelda game if he put his mind to it.
