Yes, it’s a monster – Capcom’s Monster Hunter Tri has entered the chart at a respectable #5. This is very good news indeed considering that the future of western releases for the series pretty much depended on Tri’s success. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction is still #1 and Just Dance remains at #2.

Dead to Rights: Retribution is the only new entry at #22. Band Hero is on the rise due to stores flogging it off cheapy – it’s up from #29 to #14 – while as predicted last week Ubisoft’s Avatar game is back on the rise up from #26 to #20.

Square-Enix genre mixing Nier misses out on a top 40 showing but goes in at #18 in the PlayStation 3 chart and #17 in the Xbox 360 chart.

It must be really hard for publishers to predict what games will sell well on Wii. I say this because Rugby League 3, which has had next to no publicity, has managed to get to #5 in the Wii chart. When you consider Red Steel 2 is at #7, that’s quite a feat.

In the all formats top 40 there’s yet another new #1 – Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction. Grand Theft Auto Episodes: Liberty City goes in at #3. Batman Arkham Asylum: Game of the Year Edition is the only other new entry at #35.

The upcoming DVD and Blu-Ray release of Avatar could see it shoot back on the chart next week. Apparently certain CeX stores have been selling it early. Naughty!

Nintendo’s battling monsters show no sign of loosing popularity – Pokemon: Soul Silver goes in at #2 this week with Pokemon: Heart Gold at #4. I would have placed money on it being the other way around. Square-Enix’s Just Cause 2 takes the top spot of the chart but if sales of the two Pokemon games were combined then it would be a different story.

These new releases have pushed God of War III down from #1 to #7 while Final Fantasy XIII has gone from #3 to #8. Metro 2033 has left the top 10 already – it was at #5, now it’s at #14. Prison Break: The Conspiracy does surprisingly well, in at #17, while Red Steel 2 makes its mark at #34.

I’ve lost count of the amount of new releases going straight to the top of the chart this year. Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII is the latest to do so and has pushed Battlefield: Bad Company 2 to #2. It’s the fastest selling game of the year and 54% of copies sold were on PlayStation 3 with the remainder (46%, for those poor at maths) on Xbox 360.

Ben 10: Alien Force – Vilgax Attacks is the 2nd highest new entry at #13, managing to even outsell popular PC thing Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II which goes in at #14. With the movie now out the apparently very good (even EDGE liked it) Alice and Wonderland jumps in at #34 while Sonic dashes in one place behind with Sonic Classic Collection on DS.

Predictably, PSP-exclusives Fat Princess and Eye of Judgment: Legends don’t get a look in. Sony only has themselves to blame…

The law of gravity also applies to the top 40 chart – what comes up, must come down. Aliens vs Predator was #1 last week. It’s now at #2, knocked off the top by the heavily promoted Heavy Rain. It’s the first Sony-published title to take the top of the chart since Killzone 2 almost a year ago. Copies of Heavy Rain are also said to be in shortage, with more due to arrive in stores by next week.

Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing is the next highest new entry at #8. It’s the Wii version that has been shifting the most copies, followed by Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Army of Two: The 40th Day is the week’s biggest faller dropping all the way from #10 to #30. Level 5’s RPG White Knight Chronicles is the only other new addition to the chart at #35.

Konami’s hopes must be shattered – Silent Hill: Shattered Memories hasn’t made the top #40 although it goes in at #11 in the Wii chart and #5 in the PlayStation 2 chart. And no, that isn’t a typo – Konami have released it on PlayStatation 2 instead of PlayStation 3.

It’s a good week for Sega – despite mixed reviews Alien Vs Predator has managed to shove Bioshock 2 off the top of the chart after just one week. Rebellion also claim that it’s the fastest selling game of the year so far, beating even Bioshock 2. Sega’s Vancouver 2010 tie-in is in at #11 this week too, which likewise, has been getting some negative reviews.

There can’t be many Van Halen fans in the UK – Guitar Hero: Van Halen has failed to enter the top 40. The best it can do is #17 in the Xbox 360 chart.

Dante’s Inferno has fallen like a sinner dropping into hell this week, going from #9 to #22. The very similar Darksiders is back on the rise though, up from #32 to #19. And after appearing at #14 last week due to “super bowl fever”, Madden NFL 10 has fallen from #14 to #39.

Another dimension, a new galaxy, intergalactic planetary – Mass Effect 2 has gone straight to #1 in the chart pushing Just Dance to #2. Sony’s MAG charges in at #4 while Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars has failed to make the top 40. It does though enter the Wii chart at a respectable #6.

It looks like Bayonetta is already on its way out of the chart, dropping from #14 to #25 this week. Dragon Age: Origins is back in though at #31.

Will Dante’s Inferno – this week’s big release – be able to topple Mass Effect 2? Find out in seven days time.

Shock! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been knocked of its loft perch by Just Dance. If it wasn’t for Ubisoft’s uber rubbish dancing game then Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would have been at the top of the chart for 10 weeks straight. Incidentally, Just Dance is Ubisoft’s first #1 since Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 way back in March 2008.

The much improved sequel Army of Two: The 40th Day is the only new entry in the chart at a respectable #4. Bayonetta has dropped from #5 to #7 while Darksiders has risen in its second week of release and goes up from #8 to #6.

It’s also pleasing to note that Borderlands is back on the rise, going from #23 to #13. It has been something of a steady seller, which pretty much guarantees that a sequel will appear somewhen.
